the lovely website

case study #redesign #shopify

the lovely boutique market is a small brick & mortar business that resells vintage furniture, home decor and clothing. the lovely hadn't had a website update since the e-commerce site was established in 2020, and it showed. customers could not browse easily and there was no search function at all on the website. usability was seriously lacking, and brand identity had room for improvement. in collaboration with the owner, i was able to breathe new life into their website.

problem

the lovely's website was originally hosted via wordpress and it was no longer functioning properly. they needed improvements in usability, function and branding.

goals

- integrate their e-commerce platform from wordpress to shopify.
-  optimize website for function and usability
- create an updated brand identity

integration

the owner wanted to move to Shopify but was concerned about the look and feel of the website. cost was also a factor. i selected three Shopify themes at different price points to mock up and present for selection.

information architecture

the previous website held a lot of information but it was organized poorly. i took the information present and card sorted it in order to optimize the layout of the updated website. many of the cards were outdated, so i worked with the owner directly to sort which items were not necessary to add to the new site.

feature prioritization

there are a number of features available via
Shopify, both native to the theme and downloadable by external application. along with the owner, we prioritized which features would be present on the updated website.

collection modification

the owner wanted to implement browsing by era, as the shops items are all vintage. this played into not only the site map but also how the collections would be organized within the limitations of the Shopify platform. this hurdle was solved by manipulating the Shopify collections to present the correct type and/or category for each collection.

design elements

the owner of the lovely did not have comprehensive branding to bring to this website. i was able to hone an optimized brand identity for them. their brand identity revolved around:
- retro
- refined
- eclectic
- local

-
improve community elements such as live events and markets
